Does the colour of your mug change the taste of your tea?

One of the big changes I’m making across the website is giving more mug options including mugs with a white inside as well as the coloured ones. A couple of people over the years have mentioned that they don’t like drinking from coloured mugs, which I hadn’t really thought much about before.

But apparently, there’s a bit of science behind it. Who knew your mug could mess with your brew? Some studies suggest that the colour of your mug can affect how you perceive the taste of your drink. It’s not that the mug is actually changing the tea or coffee, it’s more about psychology.

White mugs have been linked with a stronger or more bitter-tasting cup, while darker or warmer colours can sometimes make a drink seem a little sweeter. The idea is that your brain associates certain colours with certain flavours... blue and red for example, can be linked with sweet things like berries or fruit.

So, if you’re very particular about your tea, maybe the inside of your mug matters more than you thought. From now on, I’ll be adding more options where possible, including mugs with a white inside. And if you don’t see the colour you want when ordering, pop a note on your order and I’ll do my best to sort it.
